Retaining Wall Patterns
Explore various block patterns for your retaining wall projects using the versatile AB Collection.
The AB Collection, AB Aztec Collection, and the AB Europa Collection can be used to create a variety of pre-set and random patterns. A pre-set pattern is repeated every two or three courses of block. See the approved plans for which layers the geogrid reinforcement will be required.
A single course consists of a full size block, approximately 8 in. (200 mm) high. Random patterns used on a reinforced wall require a level surface every 2 courses for proper installation of geogrid.
Important Notes:
- •Patterned walls will have a 6° setback
- •Walls with curves should always use the 2 course pattern to minimize cutting and fitting
- •For walls requiring geogrid use the 2 course pattern to allow for proper geogrid placement
- •The base course of a standard patterned wall should always be of full size blocks (AB Classic, AB Aztec Classic or AB Dover) and for lite patterns, half width blocks (AB Jumbo Jr, AB Aztec Junior or AB Palermo) and needs to be included in the estimate. For each 10 ft. (3.0 m) of wall length you will need 7 full size blocks, 14 half size blocks. For 10 ft. (3.0 m) of wall length for AB Capstones, you will need 7 AB Caps.

Pattern Design Tips
Pre-Set Patterns
Pre-set patterns repeat consistently every 2-3 courses, creating a uniform appearance. These patterns are ideal for formal landscapes and projects requiring geogrid reinforcement.
Random Patterns
Random patterns create a more natural, organic look. Remember to maintain level surfaces every 2 courses for proper geogrid installation on reinforced walls.
Curved Walls
For walls with curves, use the 2-course pattern to minimize cutting and ensure proper fit around radiused sections.
Color Mixing
Combine multiple colors within the same pattern to create unique, custom designs that complement your landscape.
